MINSK, 1 March (BelTA) – Calling for sanctions against compatriots and business is a betrayal of the homeland, Piotr Petrovsky, an expert with the Belarusian public association Belaya Rus, said when commenting on the announced meeting of the Norwegian company Yara with the Belarusian diaspora to discuss the supply of Belarusian potash fertilizers.
“First, it is not clear in this situation why involve a diaspora, what country this diaspora is from and why it should determine whether to impose sanctions on someone or not. Secondly, it is not clear whether it is a Belarusian diaspora or it is Belarusian only in name and is controlled by completely different people. Is this diaspora ready to harm its own homeland and compatriots for the sake of preserving its registration in other countries? Thirdly, Belarusian potash fertilizers will always have a sale market,” Piotr Petrovsky noted.
According to the expert, those who call themselves the diaspora do not always represent the interests of their original homeland. “Calling for sanctions against citizens of Belarus, against economic entities, especially state-owned enterprises, which are the linchpin of a welfare state, is not just a blow. I would say that people who call themselves the Belarusian diaspora betray their homeland by calling for sanctions against it. This shows that these citizens who have fled their homeland hate her and their compatriots. They are ready to do harm to our state. They try to worsen the situation in their homeland, they betray it and in fact declare a sanctions war on it,” he said.
