MINSK, 9 February (BelTA) – The demonstrative arrest of the Latvian reporter Lato Lapsa in retaliation for a series of books that expose government officials is a red flag for Latvian citizens, the Latvian blogger, public figure Roman Samul made the statement in a recent episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
Roman Samul said: “I’ve been saying that Latvia’s leadership will deal with non-citizens first and then with Latvians. And one recent story is quite indicative. I am talking about the arrest of a very prominent Latvian reporter Lato Lapsa. He has written a series of books to expose our government officials, who have stolen money. In order to justify their thievery and replenish the Latvian budget, they raised key rates on, for instance, energy resources and so on.”

The blogger pointed out that there is no way Lato Lapsa can be described as a pro-Russian or pro-Belarusian reporter. “On the contrary, he is a bit of a Nazi, you know. And even he has been arrested literally as a demonstration. Certainly, he was released 48 hours later. But it is the first alarm bell for citizens of Latvia,” he noted.

Roman Samul went on saying that after he was released, Lato Lapsa went on social media to talk about his detention. “The post went along these lines: congratulations, dear citizens of Latvia, you now live in a fascist state where you cannot speak the truth and even more so you cannot speak up in public. We, activists from the Baltic states, talked about it as early as five years ago. Those alarm bells were quite strong then. And now Latvian ‘intellectuals’ are starting to wake up, too,” he concluded.
