BelTA launches exhibition celebrating Belarus’ milestones in Brest

BREST, 20 December (BelTA) – The Belarusian news agency BelTA is running an exhibition called as Belarus. Takeoff in Brest as part of the national social and cultural campaign Marathon of Unity, BelTA learned.

The exhibition in the Korona shopping center features photos taken over the period of 30 years of independent Belarus. They were made in the early 1990s by BelTA’s photographers Arkady Nikolayev, Vladimir Shuba and Alexander Didevich. The exhibition also makes use of the unique photos from the Belarusian State Archives of Films, Photographs and Sound Recordings. Every poster has QR codes. By scanning them, visitors can get more information about different periods of the history of Belarus

This exhibition has traveled to Brest for the first time.
Maria Polubotko together with her 10-year-old daughter Milana was among visitors. “Now Belarus is a modern state, keeping up with the times. What we can see here is history. A child, of course, needs to know it. It's important to explain, to answer questions, because it's difficult for modern children to understand the realities of 30 years ago. But the main thing is that it is interesting. Stories are one thing but a visual picture helps to understand. It is easier for children to imagine,” Maria Polubotko said.

She added: "The exhibition is very interesting. It is important to tell children our history to make them understand that we need to appreciate what we have. After all, everything is relative."

Yelena Plavskaya visited the exhibition with her colleagues. "How did we live in the 1990s? Those were my student years. There were no foodstuffs in the stores. We had to buy them with coupons. It was not like today. Nowadays the choice is huge," she said. "Probably, we needed to go through this path. Everything is developing, and the exhibition shows us the successful path of our country."

Attending the exhibition were also young people. They were even slightly bewildered by the comparison. "We see how Belarus is growing and developing. It is just impossible to imagine any of the things shown here. For example, one computer for the whole school. Nowadays every classroom has several dozens of computers, everyone has a computer at home. Looking at the photos of the hospital, I can hardly imagine that it was like that. Our medical facilities are well equipped now," 16-year-old Valeria Bubnova said.

BelTA is also presenting the photo exhibition Parallel Worlds during the Marathon of Unity. This project juxtaposes the two worlds going in parallel along different paths over the past 30 years of independence. One of them is the path of peace, creation and achievements. The second, “parallel world”, chose the path of hatred and degradation.
