MINSK, 17 May (BelTA) - Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park has sent a batch of bison to Kostroma Oblast of Russia, BelTA learned from the website of the national park.
According to the latest data, the European bison population in Belovezhskaya Pushcha is 675 head. “The European bison in Belarus is included in the Red Book and is under protection. The actual number for the national park is much higher than the optimal number. This enables the park to sell the wild animals to economic entities in the country and abroad who want to keep and breed bison in semi-free conditions and have the necessary opportunities for this,” representatives of the wildlife and hunting department of the national park said.
Belovezhskaya Pushcha has received permission from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection to catch and export bison and has sent a batch of animals to Russia under the agreement with Viola Company from Kostroma Oblast.
“Catching, keeping in quarantine, preparing veterinary and other necessary documents is a long process. The result of the work done is important both for the national park (population regulation, additional income) and for the buyer. We are talking about creating a micro-population of bison, demonstrating animals to tourists and replenishing the fauna of Kostroma Oblast,” the representatives of Belovezhskaya Pushcha said.
