Belarusian students bag medals at International Earth Science Olympiad

MINSK, 13 September (BelTA) – Belarusian students have become medalists at the 13th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO 2019) that took place in Daegu, Republic of Korea, BelTA has learned from the press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of Belarus.

Belarusian students took part in this prestigious international competition after a years-long break. They bagged two medals at once, a gold medal and a bronze one. Ninth-grade student at Vitebsk Gymnasium No.2 Dmitry Mikasko was victorious in the International Team Field Investigation (ITFI). Ninth-grade student at Brest Gymnasium No.1 Denis Rabchuk finished third in the individual competition.

The students had to test their skills in different areas, including identification of minerals and rocks, geological and geomorphological hazard assessment, issues related to climate change, coastal processes, water resources quality, world ocean, soil and biosphere pollution. The official language of IESO is English.

Preparation of the national team for the IESO was carried out with the assistance of the staff of the BSU Geography and Geoinformatics Faculty and International Relations Faculty, the Institute of Geology, and a branch of the Scientific-Production Center for Geology.

More than 160 students from 43 countries participated in the IESO.
