MINSK, 13 May (BelTA) – Scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus have been awarded the interstate prize Stars of the Commonwealth for R&D work in the area of space exploration, the press service of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus told BelTA.
The Belarusian team includes Director General of the United Institute of Informatics Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Aleksandr Tuzikov, Director of the R&D enterprise Geoinformation Systems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Sergei Zolotoi, and Head of the Joint Programs on Space and Information Technologies Department of the United Institute of Informatics Problems Sergei Korenyako. The scientists are awarded for a great contribution to the development and the successful realization of Belarusian-Russian programs in the area of space exploration, for R&D work for the sake of development of Belarus' space industry, and for bolstering cooperation between member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States in the area of research and peaceful uses of outer space.
For the last 20 years the United Institute of Informatics Problems and the R&D enterprise Geoinformation Systems have been implementing Union State programs on space exploration together with Russian colleagues. They are now implementing the Union State program Integration-SG. Results of these programs are meant to expand the common R&D and information space of Belarus and Russia, integrate their ground and orbital space assets as well as intellectual and manufacturing resources for the sake of research and peaceful uses of outer space.
The R&D products created as a result of the programs, the scientific and manufacturing experience of implementing complicated space industry projects became the foundation for creating the Belarusian space system for the remote sensing of Earth. The system includes an orbital component and ground infrastructure. The R&D products and the experience allowed broadly using results and technologies of Earth sensing as part of the national economy. Apart from that, the results gave a powerful impulse to the development of new sophisticated technologies, including in instrument making, materials science, and information technologies.
The experience and R&D accomplishments allowed the R&D enterprise Geoinformation Systems to start implementing the Eurasian Economic Union's program on creating an integrated EAEU system for making and providing space and geoinformation products and services on the basis of national sources of remote Earth sensing data. Cooperation with the relevant organizations of the Eurasian Economic Union member states was established.
The interstate prize Stars of the Commonwealth is awarded every year to representatives of the CIS states in recognition of the most significant accomplishments in the sphere of humanitarian activities that are on par with the level of world accomplishments and that contribute to the development of individual CIS states and the Commonwealth of Independent States as a whole.
