Belarusian Parliament speaker: Teachers determine our children's future

MINSK, 21 August (BelTA) – Ahead of the new academic year, Chairman of the House of Representatives Igor Sergeyenko met with teachers at the Belarusian Academy of Education on 21 August, BelTA reports.

“These days, the education system is finalizing its preparations for the new academic year. In just ten days, over a million of our children will go to school. What tasks does the education system have today? First of all, it is preparing highly educated young people, not only at the secondary level but especially in vocational and higher education,” Igor Sergeyenko said.
According to him, the education sector now boasts excellent resources and facilities. “Renovation work is underway in schools across the country, with some facilities to be commissioned by 1 September. But, perhaps, the heart of any educational institution has always been the teacher and will remain so. Their attitude, qualifications and dedication to their work ultimately determine what kind of individuals our children become after school, where they continue their education and what career paths they choose,” the speaker noted.
“A lot has been done in secondary and higher education in recent years. We now have a refined testing system for school graduates that is, let us say, combined with the university admissions process. That is, everything required by the head of state and legislators has been resolved. Revisions to the Education Code now include provisions based on local experience, child rights protection and a range of other education-related matters,” Igor Sergeyenko emphasized. “Today, we had a conversation with the team of the Academy of Education. As a leading educational university, it is responsible for training and professional development of teaching staff, publishing textbooks and conducting research (with more than 50 doctors and candidates of science).”

The speaker added that the conversation was productive. “Some of the questions that were raised today should perhaps be considered by the House of Representatives. They touched upon establishing legal responsibility for historical falsification and creating a national framework for patriotic upbringing. And many other things that reflect real life concerns. We will see how to use them in our work,” he said. “And the audience is highly educated. You can imagine what level and potential is concentrated here. There are practically four hundred staff members.”
“The most important advice [to all teachers] is to be a true teacher in life. And every teacher must understand that they are not only teaching but also upbringing. This is fundamental to the educational process.”
