Belarusian parliament speaker meets with ECO secretary general

MINSK, 31 July (BelTA) - Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko met with Secretary General of the Economic Cooperation Organization Khusrav Noziri in Tehran on 31 July, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.

The Economic Cooperation Organization is a regional interstate economic organization formed in 1985 by the countries of Central Asia and the Middle East and is the successor of the Regional Cooperation Organization for Development, which operated on the basis of the Treaty of Izmir signed by the three founding countries - Iran, Pakistan and Turkiye on 12 March 1977.

The organization will mark its 40th anniversary in 2025. Over the period it has gone from a regional structure to an observer in the UN. In this regard, Igor Sergeyenko said that Belarus, as one of the founding countries of the UN, has been consistently promoting such topics in this global organization as recognition of the diversity of paths of progressive development, development of the potential of middle-income countries, combating human trafficking, protection of the traditional family, promotion of youth policy and some others.

The speaker also informed Khusrav Noziri about Belarus’ work in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. At the Second National Forum on Sustainable Development held on 22 June  2024, it was noted that Belarus had moved up from 34th to 30th place in the Global SDGs Rankings.

The speaker of the House of Representatives assured that the Belarusian MPs are ready to continue supporting any endeavor that contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda, emphasizing the importance of exchanging views on the processes taking place both in Central Asia and in Europe with a focus on initiatives to develop mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation.
