MINSK, 28 April (BelTA) - A Belarusian parliament delegation led by Chairman of the House of Representatives of Belarus, First Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia Igor Sergeyenko laid a wreath and flowers at the Eternal Flame on Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd, Russia, BelTA has learned.

Mamayev Kurgan is an elevated area on the right bank of the Volga River in the Central District of Volgograd. Fierce battles took place here during the Battle of Stalingrad from September 1942 to January 1943. In 1967, the monument "To the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad" was unveiled on the kurgan. Its central figure is the iconic statue "The Motherland Calls". Mamayev Kurgan also contains several mass and individual graves, holding the remains of approximately 40,000 defenders of Stalingrad.
The statue "The Motherland Calls" serves as the compositional centerpiece of the entire ensemble. It depicts a woman holding a sword, standing in a pose that calls for battle. The statue stands 85 meters tall  from the base of its pedestal to its peak with the sword and 52 meters without it. Made of reinforced concrete, it consists of 5,500 tonnes of concrete and 2,400 tonnes of metal structures (excluding the pedestal it stands on). The monument was cast in one go, without allowing the concrete to set, to avoid seams.
The Belarusian parliament delegation arrived in Volgograd to take part in the Belarus-Russia Union State international forum "Great Heritage – Common Future", which will be held on 28-29 April. The forum will serve as a platform to discuss the preservation of historical memory, countering attempts to distort facts about the Great Patriotic War and World War II, and fostering patriotic education among young people.
Participating in the forum will be parliamentary delegations from over twenty countries, including CIS member states and friendly countries of Europe, Asia, and Latin America, as well as public figures, academics, and international experts.

The plenary session of the Union State international forum "Great Heritage - Common Future" will take place on 29 April.
