MINSK, 4 June (BelTA) – Achieving one's goals with the help of sanctions is impossible, BelTA learned from Tamara Shatlikova, a member of the Standing Commission on Legislation and State Construction of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus.
“Sanctions are an ineffective and destructive method of foreign policy. International experience shows that it is impossible to achieve any goals with the help of sanctions. Sure, for a while sanctions can cause inconveniences, primarily to companies and citizens that have nothing to do with events that prompted other countries to impose sanctions. In the long run, companies will adapt to new circumstances and act taking into account the current situation, and the impact on citizens will be minimized,” Tamara Shatlikova noted.
To every action, there is always a reaction, she pointed out. “Any state should protect its interests and take appropriate measures, including retaliatory sanctions. In many cases, countries that started pressuring others with sanctions suffer more severe consequences than the countries that have to defend themselves. As a lawyer and a member of the Council of the Republic, I believe that any international disputes should be solved through negotiations and a constructive dialogue,” Tamara Shatlikova added.
