Belarusian MP describes CSTO as guarantor of international, regional security

MINSK, 25 May (BelTA) – Chairman of the International Affairs and National Security Commission of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Sergei Rachkov took part in a session of the coordinating conference of heads of defense and security committees (commissions) of the parliaments of the CSTO member states under the Council of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly in Moscow, BelTA learned from the upper house of the Belarusian Parliament.

The meeting was led by Vladimir Shamanov, Chairman of the Committee on Defense of the State Duma of the Russian Federal Assembly. Eight issues were considered during the meeting. The MPs heard the report of CSTO Deputy Secretary General Samat Ordabayev on countering the challenges and threats to collective security, the state and prospects of military cooperation within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. Rustam Shokhmurod, chairman of the law and order, defense and security committee of Majlisi Namoyandagon of Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan, spoke about the progress in the implementation of the priorities of the Republic of Tajikistan during its presidency in the CSTO in 2021.

The participants of the coordinating conference analyzed the military and political situation in the CSTO Caucasus and Eastern European zones of collective security. Anatoly Sidorov, the Chief of the CSTO Joint Staff, briefed the MPs about the joint exercises with the CSTO troops (collective forces) in 2021.

The Collective Security Treaty Organization is the guarantor of international and regional security, stability, and collective protection of independence, territorial integrity and the sovereignty of the state. Belarus attaches great importance to participation in the CSTO, makes efforts at the national level to strengthen the organization and actively supports the development of its parliamentary dimension. Such events help us to coordinate the actions of the CSTO parliaments on current issues of the international and national security agenda,” Sergei Rachkov said following the conference.
