Belarusian MP approves of Lukashenko’s straight answers in Time magazine interview

MINSK, 12 August (BelTA) – In a recent interview with the U.S. magazine Time Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko demonstrated the straightforwardness and sincerity he is known for and gave absolutely precise and unambiguous answers even to the most provocative questions, BelTA learned from Viktor Azarenok, member of the State Construction, Local Self-Government, and Regulation Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus.

“In the interview with the American magazine Time the head of state, with his usual directness and frankness, gave absolutely clear and unambiguous answers even to the most provocative questions,” Viktor Azarenok said. “Understanding that the most pressing issue today is the international situation in connection with what is going on in Ukraine, Aleksandr Lukashenko once again clearly outlined Belarus’ stance: we are not at war with anyone, we have never attacked and do not attack anyone, but we will not allow shots in our back or backs of our brothers and the closest allies, the Russians.”
The president plainly stated that both Russia and Belarus sensibly evaluate the situation and have all the necessary resources to defend themselves. The head of state emphasized that Belarus will always stand by Russia, but at the same time has no intention of distancing itself from the world because “Belarus has always sought to develop friendly relations with neighbors.” “At the same time, the head of state stated in no uncertain terms: we are an independent country that has its own position on absolutely all matters. We do not need prompting. We are not afraid of ultimatums and sanctions. And most importantly, we do not abandon our own and do not sell our opinions,” the MP noted.

“Everything that the head of state said during the interview is not only the voice of official Minsk, but also a reflection of opinions and convictions of literally every Belarusian. It is evidenced by the public response that the interview has caused. This is why the words of the head of state have enormous power: both the USA and Western countries need to understand it and take it into account. The fact that Time magazine readers saw an interview with Aleksandr Lukashenko in an abbreviated and distorted form, to put it mildly, suggests that they understand, take into account, and are wary,” Viktor Azarenok added.
