MINSK, 11 January (BelTA) – The situation at Belarus’ borders was described by Chief of the International Military Cooperation Department, Aide for International Military Cooperation to the Belarusian Defense Minister Valery Revenko in an interview with the Defense Ministry’s TV company VoyenTV, BelTA has learned.

Valery Revenko remarked that a number of challenges and threats exist at Belarus’ borders in the run-up to the presidential election. “Activities are in progress. Forces and assets [of neighboring countries in the west] are getting reinforced in a systemic manner, year by year. There is nothing extraordinary about it. No, they do routine work and build up strength without paying any attention to us. They don’t even think about justifying their actions somehow. They simply systemically create a threat near Belarus’ borders,” he said.

The minister’s aide noted that there is one very serious danger. “These are actions not of defense agencies of the countries near our borders but actions of certain political circles, governments that form units out of our self-exiled opposition, train and arm them. It is definitely a threat. They may behave inadequately. They may simply be given an order to do something, to carry out some provocation. We are ready for it. We are analyzing everything and making preparations,” Valery Revenko stressed.

He added that among other steps preventive work had been done with military attachés of foreign states, who are accredited in Belarus. “We have distinctly informed them about our elections, our legislation, and how we will construe various unconstructive actions on the part of foreign states, including military attachés,” the minister’s aide noted.
