Belarusian, Chinese universities hold conference on Victory’s 80th anniversary

MINSK, 24 September (BelTA) - An international scientific and practical conference dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese people in the Anti-Japanese War and the end of World War II was held at the Academy of Public Administration under the Aegis of the President of the Republic of Belarus in an online format, BelTA has learned.

The event was organized by the Center for Chinese Studies at the Academy of Public Administration and the Center for Belarusian Studies at East China Normal University. The main goal of the conference was to preserve historical memory, an important direction of Belarusian-Chinese strategic cooperation.

In his speech at the conference, Rector of the Academy of Public Administration Igor Buzovsky emphasized the relevance of the event taking place just three weeks after the historic 25th summit of heads of state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Tianjin and the grand military parade in Beijing honoring the 80th anniversary of the Chinese people's victory over Japanese militarism and the anniversary of the end of World War II. Both events were attended by Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. The significance of the event is also underscored by the important visit of a Chinese delegation led by Li Xi, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, to Belarus.

Professor Wu Jian, Vice President of East China Normal University, who participated in the conference, noted that during World War II, the Chinese and Belarusian peoples were connected by a common fate. It was then that the Chinese and Belarusian peoples fought side by side and made a significant historical contribution to the defeat of fascism and militarism, cementing an unbreakable friendship. This conference will help preserve the shared historical memory of both nations.

Professor Bei Wenli, the head of the Center for Belarusian Studies at East China Normal University, focused on the need for joint efforts to counter the distortion and falsification of the results of World War II and to foster historical memory among the youth of China and Belarus. In this regard, he made several specific proposals for conducting events within the framework of joint activities of the centers.

Professor Valery Matsel, the head of the Center for Chinese Studies at the Academy of Public Administration, delivered a report on the participation of Belarusians in the defeat of militarist Japan and the liberation of Northeast China from Japanese invaders. He emphasized that Belarus and China provide a clear example to the world of respectful attitudes toward their historical past and military history, which demonstrate the decisive role of the USSR and China in achieving a common victory over German fascism and Japanese militarism. The experience of military cooperation between Belarus and China during the Great Patriotic War and the Soviet-Japanese War vividly shows that our countries and peoples have not only a heroic past but also a significant present and future.

Participants noted that the conference was a vivid testament to the tribute of memory, respect, and gratitude to the heroism of the Belarusian and Chinese peoples in the fight against German fascism and Japanese militarism.

Attending the conference were students, teachers, and graduate students from the Academy of Public Administration under the Aegis of the President of the Republic of Belarus and its partner institution, East China Normal University, as well as employees from the centers for Belarusian and Chinese studies and others.
