Belarusian CEC approves plan of organizational measures for constitutional referendum

MINSK, 21 January (BelTA) - The Central Election Commission has approved a calendar plan of organizational measures for the preparation and conduct of the national referendum on the constitution amendments, BelTA has learned.

"By 22 January, we are to complete the nomination of representatives to the territorial commissions, by 25 January - to approve the membership of the commissions. The polling stations shall be set up no later than 1 February. Nomination of representatives to the precinct commissions shall be completed no later than 3 February. We must form the precinct commissions no later than 20 days before the referendum, and no later than 6 February," said Igor Karpenko, chairman of the Belarusian Central Election Commission.

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko signed Decree No.14 “On calling the nationwide referendum” on 20 January. According to the document, the nationwide referendum on amendments and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus shall be held on 27 February 2022.

The decree contains the wording of the referendum question, which is reproduced verbatim in the voting ballot: “Do you accept the amendments and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus?”. The amendments and additions to the Constitution submitted to the referendum are listed in the decree.

In accordance with the Electoral Code, the decision adopted by a national referendum shall have a legal force. It shall enter into force 10 days after its official publication. It the decision adopted by referendum shall be an integral part of the Constitution.

The Central Election Commission shall organize the referendum, sum up its results and observe the enforcement of the appropriate legislation.
