Belarusian army tests air control system

BARANOVICHI, 4 April (BelTA) – The Belarusian Air Force and Air Defense have carried out a flight test of a new air control system, BelTA has learned.

In line with the scenario of the test an aircraft trespassed upon the Belarusian air space. It was a cargo aircraft IL-76 where the latest air control system was deployed. The “unidentified” vessel was detected by radars near Molodechno. A MiG-29 jet fighter stationed in Baranovichi was utilized to intercept the target. On approach the pilot was supposed to find the target, classify it, and contact the pilots. Once the operations were complete, it turned out “the intruder” was in distress with all the navigation systems malfunctioning and the vessel having lost its course. The jet fighter helped the distressed aircraft find its bearings and land in Baranovichi.

During the test the IL-76 crew monitored the real air situation in real time, including the movement of “the intruder” and the interceptor. The airborne staff was collecting information from all the ground-based radar stations. Representatives of the Belarusian Defense Ministry told BelTA, when airborne, the air control system can receive data from all radars, including those from the Russian AWACS-type aircraft A-50. The air control system can track the real situation on the ground, in the sea, and in the air and control both air units and ground-based air defense systems,” said the source. The new air control system was made in Belarus.

The source noted that the training situations similar to the one created on 4 April are created regularly in order to allow the Air Force and Air Defense troops to practice their actions in an emergency.
