The campaign kicked off in September 2019. Since then, a lot of events featuring representatives of local authorities and the public have taken place in cities and districts of Brest Oblast. There are 929 war memorials and places of military glory in the region. Participants of the campaign collected soil from these sites in special capsules and handed them over to the Brest Fortress.

“I believe that this campaign helps preserve the historical memory. It is very important. Some hotheads have started to take down monuments and revise the history of the Great Patriotic War itself. It is our duty to continue protecting this historical memory,” Brest Mayor Aleksandr Rogachuk said.

Chairwoman of the Council of Veterans of Brest Maria Gladun thanked the participants of the event and congratulated them on upcoming Victory Day. She urged not to forget those people who worked and gave their lives for the Victory. As many as 165 war veterans live in Brest.

The participants of the commemorative meeting laid flowers at the Eternal Fire and observed a minute of silence to honor the memory of the defenders of the legendary fortress. The capsules with soil from war graves were placed in the St Nicholas Garrison Church in the Brest Fortress. On 9 May, they will be sent to Minsk to be placed into the crypt of the All Saints Church.
