Belarus views electoral standards as instrumental in building public confidence in elections

MINSK, 20 September (BelTA) — Standards of electoral process play a key role in building public confidence in elections, Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Igor Karpenko said during a plenary session of the international conference "International standards of electoral process: Experience and development prospects" in Minsk on 20 September, BelTA has learned.

"It is a great honor for us to host such an important event, which brought together a wide expert community from various countries. Among our guests are heads and staff of the central electoral bodies of the CIS member states, parliamentarians, representatives of interstate agencies, political parties, public associations, scientists and students," Igor Karpenko said.

"Free and fair elections are the pillar of a democratic society. They ensure the rights of citizens to participate in political life and form government bodies. Standards of electoral process play a pivotal role in building public confidence in elections. The modern world puts forward new requirements to electoral systems. Our task is to find effective solutions to modern challenges," he noted. "The international conference offers new opportunities for the exchange of knowledge, experience and ideas. It is a platform for open discussion."
