MINSK, 6 September (BelTA) - The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) has made significant progress over the past 10 years and is moving in the right direction, Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Petrishenko said as he met with Maksim Yermolovich, member of the Board (Minister) for Competition and Antimonopoly Regulation of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), BelTA has learned.
“We are going to discuss the development of our interaction within the EAEU. This year we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the union and noting certain positive results. The union's GDP grew to $2.3 trillion in 2023. Mutual trade almost doubled. The union's foreign trade (with third countries) went up by as much as 60%. Industrial cooperation increased by 22% over the decade. Mutual supplies within industrial cooperation soared 2.5 times. If in 2015 a deficit was posted in the agricultural products trade, now it shows surplus. Food security in the union increased to 90%. All this progress shows that we are moving in the right direction,” Igor Petrishenko said.
The participants of the meeting discussed antimonopoly policy and competition promotion in the union. “We find it highly important to expand the list of public procurement, as the role of this institution in the EAEU is on constant rise. I would like to listen to your proposals and approaches,” the deputy prime minister said.
Next year, Belarus will take over the presidency in the EAEU. “2025 is a landmark year. We will have to take stock of the progress made in the implementation of the development strategy. We will also do our best to lay the fundamental principles, approaches to the implementation of the declaration, signed by our heads of state in December 2023, on the further development of our union until 2030 and the prospects until 2045,” Igor Petrishenko said.
According to him, during its presidency Belarus plans to observe continuity in the implementation of initiatives and propose new approaches to make the population of the five countries feel the benefits of Eurasian integration, including in transportation, tourism and employment.
