MINSK, 12 October (BelTA) - The Belarusian State Committee for Standardization will continue to initiate banning certain types of plastic packaging in the Eurasian Economic Union, Oksana Grishkevich, head of technical rate setting and standardization at the Belarusian State Committee for Standardization, said during the roundtable "Standards as a market competitiveness factor" in BelTA's press center.
"We have initiated amending the technical regulation in the Eurasian Economic Union in part of banning the use of certain types of packaging that most harm the environment. These include light plastic, plastic bags, packages made of polystyrene foam, plastic bottle labels," Oksana Grishkevich said.
The bans will not be good news for manufacturers of "harmful" packaging. In this regard the State Committee for Standardization is looking forward to the support of environmentalists and consumers.
The draft technical regulation is still in the works. Once finalized, it should be put up for public discussion.
"It is difficult to say when the work is over. It will probably take at least six months," Oksana Grishkevich noted.
