Belarus to conduct second STEPS survey of NCD risk factors

MINSK, 13 January (BelTA) – Belarus will conduct the second STEPS Noncommunicable Disease Risk Factor Survey this year, Deputy Director of the Cardiology National Research Center Aleksandr Patseyev told the media, BelTA has learned.

“This year, the Healthcare Ministry together with the WHO Regional Office will conduct the second STEPS survey,” Aleksandr Patseyev said.

The results will be used as the country prepares the next state program “Health of the Nation and Demographic Security of the Republic of Belarus”. “We should have some benchmarks. The survey will give us them,” the deputy director said.

The first STEPS Noncommunicable Disease Risk Factor Survey was conducted in Belarus in 2016-2017. The survey covered about 6,000 Belarusians aged 18-69 living all over Belarus. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of behavioral and biological risk factors for development of noncommunicable diseases in adult population. Behavioral aspects included smoking, harmful alcohol intake, physical inactivity, unhealthy diets, overweight and obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia.
