Belarus' technical support for nuclear regulator discussed at IAEA conference

MINSK, 25 October (BelTA) – Belarus' best practices in developing a technical support system for the radiation and nuclear safety authority were presented at a conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Brussels, BelTA learned from the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor).

Belarus' practices of developing a technical support system in the context of implementation of the country's first nuclear energy program were presented and discussed at the conference.

In line with the IAEA approaches, the availability of an expert community with extensive competencies in nuclear and radiation safety and related areas is viewed as part and parcel of the regulatory infrastructure. The formation of such a community in Belarus continues. In 2016, with the support of European experts Belarus started to switch from a single organization of technical support (Joint Energy and Nuclear Research Institute Sosny of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus) to a system of 16 organizations. A nuclear and radiation safety department was set up at the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry in 2017. It is mandated to coordinate scientific and technical support in this area.

“Our country's experience, approaches and solutions in part of the development of regulatory infrastructure in nuclear and radiation safety and its components are of interest to other states, both with advanced nuclear programs and also newcomers, and international organizations, including the IAEA,” Gosatomnadzor said.
