Belarus takes part in UNAIDS Program Coordinating Board session

MINSK, 17 December (BelTA) – Belarus is taking part in the 47th web-based session of the UNAIDS Program Coordinating Board running on 15-18 December 2020, BelTA learned from Belarus' Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office and Other International Organizations in Geneva.

“The Republic of Belarus was elected to the Program Coordinating Board, the main governing body of UNAIDS, for a second consecutive term for the period 2020-2022. The UNAIDS seeks to mobilize and coordinate the work of relevant UN agencies, as well as governments, non-governmental organizations, private sector and academia to combat HIV/AIDS,” the permanent mission noted.

UNAIDS Executive Director Vinnie Byanima presented a report on the UNAIDS system's activities with a particular focus on the pandemic's impact on the attainment of HIV/AIDS-related goals up to the end of 2020.

“Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the UN in Geneva Yury Ambrazevich delivered a statement in which he elaborated on the government's efforts to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on HIV/AIDS-related activities in Belarus,” the permanent mission noted. “In his statement the Ambassador pointed out the effective partnership established by Belarus with the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and Medicines Patent Pool.”

The session is expected to result in the dissemination of best practices in combating HIV/AIDS in the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It will also contribute to further mobilization of action on the part of international donors and international agencies, including UN structures while ensuring their greater flexibility in relation to the specific problems faced by the most affected states.
