MINSK, 30 May (BelTA) - Hong Kong, China’s Special Administrative Region, hosted the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed). The document was signed by 33 countries, including China and Belarus, both of which became founding members of the IOMed headquartered in Hong Kong. Consul General of Belarus in Hong Kong Tatiana Kharlap signed the international agreement on behalf of Belarus, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Affairs Ministry.

On behalf of China the convention was signed by Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi. In his welcoming speech, Wang Yi highlighted that the IOMed is being established on the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism and the founding of the United Nations. He recalled the UN Charter, which emphasizes that countries should live together peacefully as good neighbors and unite to maintain international peace and security.

"The establishment of the IOMed is an innovative step in the field of international law. It is based on the implementation of the goals and principles of the UN Charter and will complement existing mechanisms for resolving international disputes, such as judicial proceedings and arbitration," the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated. The new international body will focus on providing mediation services to resolve both interstate and private legal disputes. The key principle of mediation is to achieve a mutually acceptable solution for both parties under economically efficient and expedited procedures.

Attending the signing ceremony were around 400 high-level representatives from 85 countries and 20 international organizations, including the UN.
