Volfovich: Lithuania is unwilling to engage in constructive political dialogue

MINSK, 25 November (BelTA) - Lithuania is not willing to engage in a constructive dialogue at political level, State Secretary of the Belarusian Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich told the media following his report to the head of state on 25 November, BelTA has learned.

Earlier, Aleksandr Volfovich, on the instructions of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, met with truck drivers stranded in Belarus after Lithuania closed the border. As the state secretary noted, there are currently over 1,800 Lithuanian trucks on Belarusian territory.

“They are here for one reason only: the Lithuanian government is not willing to engage in s constructive dialogue at the political level. Just in October alone, Lithuania closed the state border four or five times, for periods ranging from 3 to 17 hours, without any notification, violating all international norms and principles,” Aleksandr Volfovich said. “Belarus wants to see the border operate in a reliable, stable, predictable and open manner as it should.”

According to the state secretary of the Security Council, he traveled along the state border in the Lithuanian direction and spoke with the drivers, explaining to them the reasons for the current situation. “Of course, people are suffering. People are concerned about the situation. So is the president,” he noted. “I was tasked with assessing their problems, explaining the situation to them: Belarus did not provoke this situation, and it is not Belarus' fault that they are stranded here. Belarus is ready for a constructive dialogue with all its neighbors at the political level. This is the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”

Aleksandr Volfovich noted that the drivers understood the situation and the issues that needed to be discussed and resolved. “It is important to talk with people. They appreciated the conversation and conveyed their gratitude to our president. Aleksandr Lukashenko was briefed about this,” he added.
