MINSK, 23 March (BelTA) - The Oreshnik medium-range missile system is a product of the Union State, and its deployment in Belarus is stipulated by the security treaty within the framework of the Union State, State Secretary of the Belarusian Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich said on the air of the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA learned.
The head of the Security Council emphasized that, in addition to joint measures of response to threats from outside, the document provides for the use and deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of the Republic of Belarus. “I would like to say that this is the first and only case when the Russian Federation has deployed tactical nuclear weapons (nuclear weapons in general) on the territory of another state. What does this say? It's about trust, probably, on the part of the Russian Federation, respect for the Republic of Belarus, since such a step has been taken, and Russia's understanding of the situation, the military and political situation around our states,” Aleksandr Volfovich emphasized,
The treaty, he said, also envisages the implementation of the decision taken by the presidents of Belarus and Russia at the end of last year to deploy the Oreshnik medium-range missile system on the territory of our country. “This missile system is a kind of a product of the Union State, because the base, the main vehicle is manufactured at the defense industry enterprises in the Republic of Belarus, and the means of destruction, missiles are manufactured in the Russian Federation. We are finishing the production of the necessary number of these vehicles, which will soon be handed over to the Russian Federation where they will install the means of destruction. Places have already been prepared for the deployment of this missile system. Although it is mobile, it still needs a place of deployment. We have maintained such places since the days of the Soviet Union. Our president has spoken about it. I think that by the end of the year we will fulfill the instructions of the two presidents, which they gave to us,” the state secretary noted.
