MINSK, 16 August (BelTA) – Belarus is ready to adequately respond to provocations like those in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, BelTA learned from Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Belarus Pavel Muraveiko.

Summing up results of the government conference hosted by Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko to discuss military security, Pavel Muraveiko said: “The president of the country pays close attention to security problems. The border is the frontier that is constantly on the president’s radar. Today we’ve discussed the conditions, factors, and threats that are concentrating in the southern theater of operations, at our southern border.”

“Honestly speaking, the situation is not simple. The concentration of forces, the steps the Ukrainian side is taking near our border, the actions in Kursk Oblast that have sent waves across the globe make us think about whether we can counteract such challenges and threats,” the General Staff chief said.

In his words, during the conference the Belarusian head of state specifically asked top officers of the Defense Ministry what the Armed Forces are ready for and how counteraction will be organized if need be. “The defense minister presented the corresponding information. The Armed Forces are ready to carry out tasks and adequately respond to any provocations and challenges that may originate against our borders and our state,” Pavel Muraveiko said.

He mentioned an increase in military presence in the southern area. The composition of the forces and assets used to ensure the security of the state has been revised. “We’ve enabled the necessary conditions for deploying units with heavy hardware. We are adequately ready to respond to provocations like those in Kursk [Oblast of Russia]. We control our state border. We’ve beefed up reconnaissance forces and assets. We are accumulating certain reserves and capabilities for creating and deploying force groupings,” Pavel Muraveiko said.
