Belarus-Poland cycling route to kick off on 2 June

GRODNO, 31 May (BelTA) – The international cycling route AvgustVelo (Augustow Velo) will be officially launched on 2 June, BelTA learned from the sport and tourism department of the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee.

The new 50km cycling route will run from Grodno to the Augustow Canal along the most picturesque places of Grodno Oblast. Among them are the villages of Radzivilki and Nemnovo, the palace and park ensemble Svyatsk, the settlement of Sopotskin, the Augustow Canal (up to the seasonal river checkpoint Lesnaya-Rudawka on the Belarusian-Polish border).

“The AvgustVelo route will link Grodno and the Belarusian part of the Augustow Canal with the 2,000km-long GreenVelo network. The Belarusian part of the route has been marked according to the European standards. The route has nearly 500 marks, seven outline maps and three recreation areas. Plans are in place to link AvgustVelo with Belovezhskaya Pushcha and develop a new cycling route, BelovezhaVelo, together with the Podlaskie Voivodeship and Brest Oblast,” the sport and tourism department said.

The official opening ceremony on 2 June will be attended by the authorities of Grodno Oblast and the Podlaskie Voivodeship of Poland. The route has been developed as part of the project “Promotion of entrepreneurship in tourism through the development of Grodno Oblast infrastructure”. The project is implemented by the sport and tourism department of the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee jointly with the Union of Gminas of Podlaskie Voivodeship under the Polish Assistance program.

The AvgustVelo logo is ready. So are the guide in several languages and information booklets in three languages. There are plans to upgrade the information and tourism center in Sopotskin, open bike rental and maintenance centers.
