MINSK OBLAST, 12 April (BelTA) – Belarusian Prime Minister Aleksandr Turchin, the vice premiers and representatives of the Council of Ministers’ Office took part in the landscaping of the Mound of Glory on the national clean-up day on 12 April, BelTA has learned.
Upon arrival, the Belarusian prime minister laid flowers at the Mound of Glory. According to Aleksandr Turchin, the monument was developed in the Soviet Union time. Its construction involved many people. “Last year we marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazis. This year we are celebrating 80 years of the Great Victory. We are adding a finishing touch to this wonderful monument. There is little left to be done before 9 May. The national subbotnik is one of the ways to give the Mound of Glory a new look,” he emphasized.

The 80th anniversary of the Great Victory is sacred for every resident of the country, the prime minister said. Aleksandr Turchin said that while seeing off Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif to the airport, the delegation was driving past the Mound of Glory. “I told him about what our country experienced during the Great Patriotic War, and not only during the war. When I told him how many years Belarus was under occupation, how many people died, he was shocked. He said that Belarus deserves a good life,” said the head of government. Aleksandr Turchin planted a number of large-leaved linden trees near the Mound of Glory.

According to Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Karanik, tidying up the lands, especially after winter, is a good tradition for all Belarusians.

“Working today on the Mound of Glory is very symbolic. Our united people broke the back of fascism, raised the country from ruins and now we all must do everything possible to make our beautiful, well-maintained country even better,” he said.

More than 20 rows of trees of different species will be planted on the site near the memorial. The future arboretum will serve scientific and educational purposes. A total of 360 trees will be planted, including lindens, birches, oaks, maples, spruces, willows, ash trees, as well as walnut and Manchurian walnut. Some 82 shrubs will also be planted. Among them will be hawthorn, birch, sea buckthorn and other species.
The national clean-up day was also attended by representatives of Minsk Oblast Executive Committee and organizations of Minsk Oblast.
