MINSK, 6 March (BelTA) – The Presidium of the Council of the Republic and the Council of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus have adopted a statement in the follow-up to the resolution titled “Eightieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War” that was passed at the 58th plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly, BelTA learned from the press service of the upper house of parliament.
“The Presidium of the Council of the Republic and the Council of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus welcome the resolution titled “Eightieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War” passed by the UN General Assembly on 4 March 2025,” the statement reads.
“The unanimous support for this resolution by the international community is an important step in preserving the memory of the tragic and heroic chapters of World War II and the great feat of the people who fought the brown plague of fascism and sacrificed their lives in the name of peace, freedom and future generations. This decision is a kind of message to the political circles of those countries that whitewash and rehabilitate criminals and their accomplices, try to distort the historical truth, destroy monuments to soldiers-liberators and ban commemorative events,” the statement reads.
The UN resolution suggested marking the anniversary of the end of World War II by holding a special ceremonial meeting of the General Assembly during the second week of May 2025. The UN also proposed to hold such meetings every five years.
“The people of Belarus cherish the history of the Great Patriotic War and consider it their sacred duty to preserve the memory of the great feat of the Soviet people. We try hard to prevent the rehabilitation of Nazism and preserve the historical truth about the Great Patriotic War, hence we passed the laws “On preventing the rehabilitation of Nazism” on 14 May 2021 and “On the genocide of the Belarusian people” on 5 January 2022. The German occupiers and their accomplices carried out genocide on the territory of Belarus, exterminated civilians, sparing neither the elderly, nor women, nor children. To this day, new evidence of the atrocities of the fascists on our land comes to the surface as new mass graves are discovered. Every third resident of the country died during the Great Patriotic War.”
