Belarus’ natural gas consumption down to 17bn cubic meters in 2023

MINSK, 23 February (BelTA) – Belarus’ natural gas consumption reduced to 17 billion cubic meters in 2023, Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich said ahead of the ministry’s collegium meeting on 23 February, BelTA has learned.

“Last year the natural gas consumption amounted to 17 billion cubic meters, down 1.7 billion cubic meters, or 9.6% as compared to 2022,” Viktor Karankevich said.

According to him, this is primarily due to the work of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The second factor is a set of energy-saving measures, which are implemented in the country. In particular, the power system has saved over 110,000 tonnes of fuel equivalent due to the implementation of such measures. The third factor is the involvement of local fuels in the country's energy balance, which also makes it possible to replace the use of imported natural gas.
