MINSK, 14 October (BelTA) – Parliamentarians will explain the proposed amendments to the Constitution during a nationwide discussion, Chair of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly Natalya Kochanova told the STV TV channel, BelTA informs.
“A number of our senators were involved in the work on the amendments to the fundamental law of our country. In addition, we kept in touch with members of the Council of the Republic who are based in the regions and were not directly involved in the work of the Constitutional Commission. We processed all the proposals submitted by the public. Members of the Council of the Republic also put forward their own initiatives. For example, we suggested introducing a separate article in the Constitution dedicated to youth affairs,” Natalya Kochanova noted.
She added that the work continues. “In the near future, after the draft Constitution is finalized, it will be submitted for nationwide discussion. Members of the Council of the Republic and the lower chamber of the parliament will get involved again in order to explain the proposed amendments,” she noted.
A reminder, earlier the Constitutional Commission submitted draft constitutional amendments to Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko. The proposals were discussed at the extended session of the Constitutional Commission attended by Aleksandr Lukashenko on 28 September. Following the discussion, the parties decided to finalize the draft amendments at the expert level and submit them for public debate. Then the wording of the updated Constitution will be polished by lawyers and the text will be reviewed again and put to a referendum that is to be held not later than 2022.
