Belarus’ MP: The closer 2025 presidential election is, the more lies Belarus will face

MINSK, 3 October (BelTA) – The closer the 2025 presidential election is, the more lies Belarus will face, Oleg Gaidukevich, a member of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, said as he commented on fake news about Belarus’ plans to seize the Chernobyl NPP, BelTA has learned.

“It is all fake stories and this is clear to everyone. Why now? On the one hand, because of the approaching presidential campaign. The closer it gets to 2025 and the election, the more lies the enemies will spread about our country. On the other hand, they are still persisting with the attempts to escalate the conflict in the region and drag Belarus into it. Therefore, they need to tell various lies about our country,” Oleg Gaidukevich said.

Why the Chernobyl NPP? There are two reasons behind it, the MP said. "First, the security of nuclear facilities around the world is a topical issue. That is why they try to spread fakes about Belarus. The second reason is that the Western public (the target audience) knows very little, but has heard something about the Chernobyl NPP from some low-quality Hollywood films," he emphasized.

"These are fake news. There will be more and more of them by the time of the election. We have learned to deal with them. We quickly dispel these fakes and tell the world the truth. The IAEA head recently visited Belarus and hailed its crucial role in the regional security as a sovereign actor. Belarus is an example of how to tackle successfully with the Chernobyl NPP accident and to build safe nuclear facilities. We have rehabilitated the Chernobyl-affected lands, and the president has done a lot for this," he added. "As a country that was exposed to the nuclear fall-out, we are very responsible in these matters. We are an example of safe development of nuclear energy, the energy of the future."
