MINSK, 21 March (BelTA) - Belarus joins the celebration of the International Day of Forests and launches the forest restoration campaign entitled Bringing Forests Back to Life, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Forestry Ministry.
The campaign, in its second year, is aimed at reforestation following last year's July storms. It will be running in Belarus from 21 March to 12 April. Last autumn, the Forestry Ministry initiative was launched by Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko. The initiative was joined later by the country’s top officials, heads of ministries, committees, and departments.
During the current campaign, major works will be performed in the most affected Gomel Oblast. It is symbolic that this time the campaign will be held under the aegis of the Year of Improvement and the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
Thousands of volunteers are expected to join the campaign. Forestry institutions will provide volunteers with necessary inventory and planting material.
Although the forest planting effort will be organized throughout the country, but the Forestry Ministry calls on volunteers to provide any possible assistance to Gomel Oblast or Mogilev Oblast, the most storm-hit regions.
The initiative will continue with the Forest! Good Deeds! Gift! campaign, which will kick off on 12 April with the focus on the beatification of Belarusian forests. The event will end on 1 May marking Labor Day.
