Belarus’ KGB arrests 14 persons for espionage, treason in 2025

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) - The State Security Committee (KGB) of Belarus has arrested 14 persons for espionage and treason in 2025, KGB Chairman Ivan Tertel told the media, BelTA has learned.

“We note the most acute problem associated with countering foreign special services. The collective West is aimed at creating a certain basis in our society for a possible armed conflict to resolve all issues in its favor in the future. Massive intelligence activities are underway on our territory both with the use of space, radio reconnaissance and, of course, secret agent intelligence. Despite all the advanced technologies, it is the basis for the work of any intelligence in the world,” he said.

In his words, over the past period of 2025, the State Security Committee suppressed the activities of 14 persons. “These are both citizens of the Republic of Belarus and foreign nationals who carried out activities related to espionage (this is for foreigners) and treason to the state (if we are talking about citizens of the Republic of Belarus),” Ivan Tertel said.

According to him, these persons conducted intelligence on the territory of Belarus, carried out reconnaissance of military infrastructure and railways. There were also attempts to penetrate the enterprises of the defense industry. “We detained nationals of Western Europe and a number of other states,” the KGB head said.

He noted that the situation worldwide and in the region remained very difficult: “Against this background, Belarus, as some of our ‘friends’ say, is 10 times more valuable for the opposing parties in terms of various events, in terms of geopolitical situation.”

“The task is, first of all, to prevent a sudden attack on the Republic of Belarus. The goal is to solve tasks related to ensuring the interests of our state and society,” Ivan Tertel said.

“Targets [of foreign special services], of course, include the authorities and administrations, individuals with access to state secrets, and vulnerabilities in our economy. An alarming factor, if we speak in the professional language of the special services, is an attempt to prepare the theater of military operations for the upcoming confrontation in an armed conflict, the KGB head said. “Of course, we are taking measures, taking into account what is happening on various fronts of the invisible war, including the events that took place in Iran and in the neighboring country, where confrontation gives rise to new forms and methods of operation. We are implementing appropriate measures so that we can respond quickly to these threats. We have enough of such measures for now.”

According to Ivan Tertel, the number of detained persons also indicates that this work is carried out at a fairly high level. Moreover, representatives of the special services of other states sometimes turn to Belarus with a request for a gesture of goodwill. Here, we are talking about the transfer of persons detained for cooperation with these special services. We are always committed to a constructive solution to all issues. We always say to our colleagues: ‘Let’s meet each other halfway and avoid aggravating the situation.’ As a rule, special services use a reciprocal exchange of detainees. So far, our foreign partners could not have provided us with anyone for an exchange,” the KGB head said.
