Belarus’ FM opines on how EU can tackle illegal migration

MINSK, 15 November (BelTA) – To tackle the problem of illegal migration, the European Union should either work with the countries that migrants flee from, or cooperate with Belarus, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov said at the international conference in Minsk to discuss regional cooperation in combating illegal migration, BelTA has learned.

“If the European Union does not want to collaborate with us, they should work with the countries that these people flee from and create all these barriers there so that law enforcement agencies in these countries prevent the exodus of migrants. They should organize joint raids at the airport, on the roads, on trains, in the forests, swamps and so on. And then they will no longer take issue with Belarus,” Maksim Ryzhenkov said.

“If the European Union resolves all problems with these countries, no one [illegal migrants] will come to Belarus, as our country is not their destination. But if the European Union chooses [to deal with this issue at its doorstep] (this will take much less money than building barriers across the entire East), then it needs to talk to us,” said Maksim Ryzhenkov.
