MINSK, 8 December (BelTA) – The decision to impose food embargo on a number of products from Western countries in response to the sanctions is absolutely right and reasonable, member of the House of Representatives, Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus Oleg Gaidukevich told BelTA.
“The government of Belarus has adopted retaliatory measures in response to the fifth round of the EU sanctions. We have chosen the right way to do it – to introduce a food embargo on products from the EU countries, the United States and those states that are pursuing a policy of sanctions against our country,” the MP said.
He believes that this is a rational response on the part of Belarus. More than that, the food embargo could and should have been introduced regardless of the sanctions. “We are able to feed our people. We do not need low-quality products from the European Union that is struggling to sell what it produces. All of Europe dreams of getting into the markets of Russia and Belarus. Quotas, farmers' riots - we all remember this very well. The markets for European products have shrunk, therefore the decision of the Belarusian government is absolutely correct and reasonable. Moreover, I think that after the sanctions are lifted, we should not resume buying food from Europe. At the same time, our producers should change the way they work in many ways. Hopefully, we will see our fruit and vegetables, our quality products on the top shelves of Belarusian supermarkets,” he said.
