Belarus’ Defense Ministry sees no prerequisites for military, political de-escalation in the world

MINSK, 20 February (BelTA) - There are no prerequisites for de-escalation of the military and political situation in the world, Valery Revenko, Chief of the International Military Cooperation Department, Aide for International Military Cooperation to the Belarusian Defense Minister, said at a briefing on topical issues of military policy, construction and development of the Armed Forces of Belarus, BelTA learned.

The event brought together representatives of foreign military-diplomatic corps from 24 countries accredited at the Defense Ministry of Belarus.

“In the modern world, every state takes into account the ongoing global and regional processes in its military policy. For a long period of time, the military and political situation has been objectively characterized as complex and tense. Unfortunately, we see no prerequisites for de-escalation at the moment,” Valery Revenko said.

He pointed to the geopolitical confrontation between the world's major powers and the clash of interests of individual coalitions of states and the struggle for influence in the changing world. He also drew attention to the growing role of military force in international relations in the absence of an effective global mechanism for controlling the production and proliferation of armaments.

Valery Revenko also emphasized the inability of virtually all multilateral mechanisms created after World War II (including the UN and the OSCE) to tackle the challenges and threats of the 21st century, the lack of political interest in their reform or the creation of new international security structures.

“The loss of mutual trust and confidence in existing international institutions forces states to protect sovereignty by building up armed forces, increasing arms production and imports, and by seeking new allies and forming new alliances. The interest in possessing nuclear weapons is growing, while the threshold for their use is dangerously decreasing. While the use of strategic nuclear weapons is still considered unlikely, the probability of using tactical nuclear warheads in modern conflicts is increasing,” Valery Revenko stated.
