Belarus' defense minister emphasizes importance of preserving historical memory of Great Patriotic War

MINSK, 30 April (BelTA) - A delegation of the Belarusian Defense Ministry led by Minister Viktor Khrenin is taking part in the 3rd International Anti-Fascist Congress “For the Unity of All Anti-Fascist Forces, for the Complete Victory over Nazism”, which is taking place in the Congress and Exhibition Center Patriot in Russia, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Defense Ministry.

Viktor Khrenin emphasized the importance of preserving historical memory and the need for consolidation in the fight against modern manifestations of fascism and Nazism. “Our country is one of the main keepers of the memory of the Great Patriotic War. All the CIS member states show the unity of approaches to the preservation of historical memory and the truth about it. In these conditions, the consolidation of progressive international forces in the fight against fascism and Nazism on the basis of a common historical policy is necessary to prevent global challenges and threats of our time. We must counter all that threatens humanity with the values of peace and dialogue. This is the main lesson of the Great Patriotic War,” he said.

“It seemed that the states of Europe, having gone through the crucible of the Second World War, would always remember the lessons of those tragic events and what fascism leads to. However, the slogan of ‘fight against communism’, put forward by Nazi Germany, is transformed and ‘hides’ today behind the mask of the protection of democracy and human rights. Democracy under the wing of NATO jets has left the peoples of Yugoslavia, Libya, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and other countries only victims and destruction, economic chaos and the lack of prospects. The fact that Nazism, defeated in 1945, has not been eradicated is evidenced by the conflict in Ukraine provoked by the West. In the conditions of the formation of a multipolar world, the countries of the Western minority resorted to the proven Hitlerian practices, raising a Nazi monster in the center of Europe, in Ukraine. Anglo-Saxon and European revanchists overthrew the legitimate authorities there, armed the newly-emerged henchmen of Bandera and Shukhevych to the teeth, made Nazi ideology the state ideology, ignited a civil war and eventually pushed the Slavic peoples together,” Viktor Khrenin said.

The defense minister also mentioned the manifestation of neo-Nazism in countries directly affected by Nazi ideology. “In the Baltic states, Poland and a number of EU countries there is an equating of criminals convicted by the Nuremberg Tribunal and those who liberated Europe from fascism. Pseudo-historians and Western media, seeking to whitewash Nazism, downplay the key role of the USSR in the victory over fascism. Modern ideological followers of fascist executioners ruthlessly and cold-bloodedly destroy memorials to Soviet soldiers, mock war graves. In a number of European countries Russophobia is promoted as a state policy. In the Baltic states, tens of thousands of people are declared subhuman and deprived of basic rights. We are also witnessing an inhumane policy towards migrants. All of this is nothing but attempts by Western revanchists to pull the bankrupt Nazi ideology out of the underworld. This moral degradation of modern European civilization was caused by the decades-long course of liberal globalism, aimed at destroying Christian spiritual and moral values in European society, first of all, the concepts of good and evil,” Viktor Khrenin added.

“Under the guise of strengthening the protection of Europe and various pseudo-defensive exercises, NATO countries are forming an armored fist that is clearly not created for protection. Active reconnaissance is being carried out, military presence is being built up in the region and, in fact, near our borders, large-scale offensive exercises are being conducted, and military budgets are being increased. Following the course of escalating the conflict in Ukraine and drawing Europe more and more into it, the peace initiatives of the Russian leadership and the new U.S. administration are being sabotaged,” the minister said.
