Belarus collects over 840,000 tonnes of secondary material resources in 2024

MINSK, 28 March (BelTA) – A total of 840,200 tonnes of secondary material resources (waste paper and cardboard, glass, plastics, worn-out tires, used oil, electrical and electronic equipment) were collected in Belarus in 2024, Director of the state institution Operator of Secondary Material Resources Oksana Gaiduk told BelTA.

According to Oksana Gaiduk, today 39.6% of all municipal waste in the country does not end up in a landfill, but is used as a secondary resource. The leaders in the use of secondary material resources are Brest Oblast (48%), Grodno Oblast (47.8%), and Vitebsk Oblast (43.4%).

“In 2024, all regions of Belarus, including Minsk, met the targets for the collection of secondary material resources. Over the past 12 years, the collection of secondary material resources has more than doubled. The use of solid municipal waste in our country has grown almost 4 times during this period. In 2012, for example, only 10% of waste generated by households was sent for recycling,” Oksana Gaiduk said.

This result became possible thanks to the systematic implementation of government programs, and the introduction of the extended producer responsibility principle in 2012. This measure created additional economic incentives for recyclers by compensating the costs of collecting secondary resources and attracted investments in the municipal waste management, the director of the institution added.
