Belarus’ CEC issues guidelines for elections of delegates to Belarusian People's Congress

MINSK, 26 February (BelTA) – We have already issued the guidelines for elections of delegates to the Belarusian People's Congress, Chairman of the Belarusian Central Election Commission Igor Karpenko said at a press conference at the CEC Information Center in Minsk on 26 February, BelTA has learned.

"In accordance with the Constitution, we have 60 days to form the Belarusian People's Congress before it convenes for the first session. On 1 March, when summing up the results of the single voting day, we plan to consider, among other things, calling the elections of delegates to the Belarusian People's Congress from civil society entities and from the newly elected deputy corps of local councils. We will need to divide the quotas for the deputy corps of local councils, and we will need to distribute the number of seats among the civil society entities that have already confirmed their participation in the elections of delegates to the Belarusian People's Congress," Igor Karpenko said.

The CEC chairman noted that the Council of the Republic will also renew its composition. "The House of Representatives and the Council of the Republic need to open the status sessions so that their members enter into their legal rights, because the members of both houses of the parliament are ex officio delegates of the Belarusian People's Congress. The Belarusian People's Congress will convene for the first session no later than 25 April. The organizing committee is already up and running,” he noted. “The guidelines for elections of delegates to the Belarusian People's Congress have already been issued. Civil society entities have already received them from the CEC. They have been approved, and we are working to fulfill all the requirements of the Constitution and the Belarusian legislation," Igor Karpenko concluded.
