Belarus’ CEC described as full-fledged subject of electoral law expert community

MINSK, 20 September (BelTA) - The CEC of Belarus is a full-fledged subject of the international expert community in the field of electoral law and technology, CEC Chairman Igor Karpenko said at the plenary session of the international conference "International Standards in the Electoral Process: Experience and Development Prospects", BelTA has learned.

“The institution of elections in Belarus in its current state turns 35 this year. As part of the Soviet Union, the Supreme Soviet of the BSSR adopted a resolution to set up the Central Commission for the Election of People's Deputies of the Byelorussian SSR as a permanent state body. During that period, the legal framework for holding elections and referendums in the country was established, which created objective conditions for the codification of the electoral legislation of sovereign Belarus," Igor Karpenko said.

The country has held four national referendums, 28 election campaigns. "The CEC of Belarus has become a full-fledged subject of the international expert community in the field of electoral law and technology," the head of the CEC said.

"This year is special for us because we held elections on a single voting day for the first time: 110 deputies of the House of Representatives and 12,511 deputies of local Councils were elected. The Belarusian People's congress acquired the status of a constitutional body, and elections of delegates to the Belarusian People's Congress were organized. The election of the president of the Republic of Belarus, which will be held in 2025, will complete the election cycle. Thus all branches of power will be renewed in accordance with the decision of the national referendum of 2022," Igor Karpenko stressed.

"The international organizations dealing with scientific and practical issues of national elections and referendums play an important role in the work to unify international electoral standards. The CEC of Belarus is a member of the World Association of Electoral Bodies, the CIS Advisory Council of Heads of Electoral Bodies and is working hard to develop ties with colleagues of foreign states," the head of the CEC added.
