Belarus CEC chief: CIS election bodies maintain close ties

MINSK, 19 September (BelTA) — The election bodies of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) are closely cooperating with each other, Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Igor Karpenko said during a meeting of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko with the heads of the CIS election bodies on 19 September, BelTA has learned.

"We have established rather close bilateral cooperation between CIS election bodies within the framework of the Advisory Council," Igor Karpenko emphasized.

"We have built up especially close ties in terms of observation of election campaigns which take place in our countries," he stressed. "We are objective, unbiased and have respect for sovereignty. We assess the election campaigns of our countries amid close international cooperation."

"We are guided by primarily the convention on standards of democratic elections, electoral rights and freedoms in the CIS member states. This unique document has been ratified by our national parliaments. Certainly, we assess the election campaigns in accordance with the national legislation of each country," he said.

"The amendments to the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus adopted at the national referendum in 2022 marked the beginning of a large-scale political modernization in our country," the head of the CEC added. "It is symbolic. On 17 September we celebrated the state holiday – the Day of People's Unity. Our ancestors set the ideology as the Belarusian people who were divided against their will by geopolitical players got reunited.”

He also emphasized: "We have learned the lesson of history, that is why nowadays we carry out state reconstruction, improve the electoral system in order to strengthen the sovereignty and independence of the country, to ensure people's power and consolidate civil society."

"In accordance with the updated legislation, we elected MPs of all levels on a single voting day. The electoral cycle continued almost until the end of April. As you know, we elected members of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly and delegates to the Belarusian People’s Congress. This new constitutional body began to work in full swing," he stressed.

"The electoral cycle under constitutional reforms will complete Belarus' presidential election in 2025," Igor Karpenko said.
