Belarus' campaign to compile national chronicle of Great Patriotic War draws support

MINSK, 15 April (BelTA) – More than 100 people have already supported the nationwide campaign of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) “The national chronicle of the Great Patriotic War: We remember everyone!”, Director of the NASB Institute of History Vyacheslav Danilovich said at another meeting of the Expert Community project “History policy: Memory about the war” in the BelTA press center on 15 April.

The campaign was launched around a month ago. “About a hundred people have already contacted the institute. Apart from collecting memories and photos, the institute aims to create a digital database of the national chronicles of the Great Patriotic War. We will also publish books on this topic as we gather enough materials. The first one will include the information we have received so far,” Vyacheslav Danilovich noted.

The institute has announced the campaign to collect memories and photos of people who contributed to the Great Victory. “Anyone who remembers anything about their ancestors and would like to share, can send us their materials by mail or e-mail,” Vyacheslav Danilovich said.

According to him, participation in the campaign will help people start associating themselves with the history of the Great Patriotic War and World War II and feel the involvement of their families in those events. Speaking about popularizing the war history and preserving the historical truth, Vyacheslav Danilovich stressed that scientists understand that it is not enough to write academic papers about results of their research. “We need to make the broader public familiar with our work and achievements. We need to adopt a comprehensive approach and reach out to people even through computer games. The most important is that they should reflect the vision of the Soviet people,” he believes. Vyacheslav Danilovich pointed out that the Soviet army destroyed 607 Nazi divisions, and the anti-Hitler coalition – 176.
