MINSK, 16 February (BelTA) – A government program on developing the digital economy and the information society in 2016-2020 has been completed in Belarus. As part of the efforts to implement the program the State Border Committee of Belarus worked hard to create the national integrated service and transaction system and improve the information and communications infrastructure of the information systems used to protect the state border and ensure border control, the committee's representatives told BelTA.
Thanks to the implementation of the first project the central office and border control units have been fitted with proper equipment. In the future the upgrade will allow the Belarusian border service to identify Belarus citizens using biometric passports. The Belarusian border service will also be able to provide digital services, including using biometric ID cards, and will be able to develop “the electronic gateway” system for the sake of its deployment at border checkpoints.
As part of the second project 26 “green border” units were equipped with modern information infrastructure.
The main purpose of both projects is to make the border crossing experience more comfortable for Belarusians and foreigners. It can be accomplished by beefing up the technical potential for realizing functions of the integrated management of the state border and for enabling conditions for the optimization of border control procedures. In turn, it will help increase the transit appeal and the tourism appeal of Belarus, the State Border Committee noted.
