MINSK, 12 November (BelTA) – Belarus intends to continue working to improve missile-based weapon systems, BelTA learned from Chairman of the State Military Industrial Committee of Belarus Roman Golovchenko on 12 November.
According to the source, the multiple-launch rocket system (MLRS) Polonez is actually the first missile technology product finished by Belarusian scientists. “The Belarus president has given instructions to develop this sphere in the future. This is why further development of missile engineering is the key avenue we are now working on,” said Roman Golovchenko.
In his words, such weapon systems are designed to deter the enemy by means of delivering fire for effect. “Their availability is a powerful factor for deterring any aggressor. This is why I am not going to hide the fact that we continue working in this area in order to come up with better missile systems,” said the official.
Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko received a personal report from the chairman of the State Military Industrial Committee earlier that day. The head of state said he wanted Belarusian defense contractors to double financial performance. Roman Golovchenko said: “In order to achieve this goal, we have to put more effort into exploring new areas. Unfortunately, the world is not calm. Conflicts come to life in various continents. Tensions between superpowers are on the rise. This is why, certainly, there is demand for defensive weapons. The Belarusian defense industry is ready to satisfy the demand. I hope the R&D products the head of state has approved will allow us to hit our targets.”
Roman Golovchenko also mentioned instructions to accelerate the development of unmanned aerial vehicles designed for delivering strikes. While they cannot replace manned aircraft, they can substantially reinforce the conventional air force.
In addition to new missiles and drones Belarus intends to continue improving its radio warfare and radio suppression systems. “Maybe weapons based on new principles of physics. We've made some headway into it. This is why we are going to move into this direction,” said Roman Golovchenko.
The official noted that weapons need to be developed fast these days. “The development of complicated systems used to take decades in the past. We no longer have such luxury. This is why the cost of errors is massive. We need to be careful about R&D,” he said.
Speaking about the export of Belarusian defense products, the official specified that virtually all the technologies and products Belarus exports are defensive. “Those are radio warfare systems, systems designed to counteract high-precision weapons, systems designed for other purposes, primarily the defense of strategic installations, troops, and assets,” said Roman Golovchenko.
