MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) - After 15 years have passed but the EU’s reaction has remained as hostile as ever, former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
"First of all, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to the brotherly Belarusian people. You have not fallen for the promises of our enemies, I cannot call them anything else. Belarus held the election in a very calm and organized manner and voted for Lukashenko. This is a very important factor that characterizes the authority of President Aleksandr Lukashenko in his country," Nikolai Azarov said.
"All those malicious comments from the EU sound absolutely familiar to me. They are annoyingly repetitive. I remember how Merkel convened the Visegrad summit after the 2010 election. She convened it to adopt a resolution condemning the democratic election in Belarus," he stated.
"I remember that summit very well because Merkel put pressure on everyone and some delegations actively supported her. Ukraine, which I represented, had the last word. So I listened to everyone and very calmly expressed our position, saying that we will not sign any resolutions or condemn anything," Nikolai Azarov said.
"The election was held smoothly. Yes, there were some clashes, but I asked Merkel a simple question: ‘Don't you have such clashes? Do you offer ice cream to those who break shop windows? If you use batons, why do you judge us?’ She came to me and tried to convince me: 'Look, you are isolating yourself'. But it is not me who is isolating myself. They have isolated themselves from common sense," he stressed.
According to him, the situation in the world has not changed. "Why do I recall this incident? Because nothing has changed since then. It is already 2025. After 15 years have passed but the EU’s reaction has remained as hostile as ever. So disregard it. Your president and his administration have stability and unity of the country to implement the policy, which they pursue. I wish you all the best on this path," he concluded.
