"On Point"
MINSK, 5 August (BelTA) - China could potentially participate as a mediating third party in Russia-USA talks on the Ukraine conflict, former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov (2010-2014) said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
“I had this idea recently when Trump mentioned that he might fly to Beijing. Why don't three leaders meet in Beijing: Putin, Xi and Trump? The negotiations between the United States and Russia have reached a point where a major third-party mediator is needed to stabilize the situation. President Xi could perform such a role. He has great authority in his country and in the world,” Nikolai Azarov said.
The former prime minister of Ukraine explained why the presence of a certain third party might be necessary at potential negotiations between the leaders of Russia and the United States. “While Trump might initially have positioned himself as a neutral mediator, he no longer maintains that role. This situation now necessitates an impartial arbitrator. And I had this idea that it would be nice if such a thing could be arranged,” he emphasized.
According to Nikolai Azarov, such a meeting could mirror the Yalta or Tehran conferences which determined the future of the world for decades to come. “Let's see what comes of this. Regrettably, Trump's impulsiveness and lack of coherent, substantive policy raise legitimate concerns that this might be possible,” he added.
