MINSK, 15 November (BelTA) - Lithuania has become a tool for the West to escalate the situation on the border with Belarus, Aleksei Avdonin, an analyst with the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research (BISR), told BelTA.
According to the analyst, Lithuania was chosen by Brussels as fuel to throw into the furnace of the border conflict. “Poland is the largest transit country. If Poland is blocked, Europe will face a collapse in goods and imports from Asia. However, Lithuania can be overlooked; it can be sacrificed to escalate the conflict. In other words, Lithuania has become the instrument that the collective West decided to use to escalate the situation on the border with Belarus. Most importantly, official Vilnius can do nothing about it. They are fully aware that they are being used for the geopolitics of major European military-political players,” the expert noted.
He also pointed out that Lithuania itself agreed to this. “When joining NATO and the European Union, the country was fully aware that it would only be a minor participant in these alliances and that at any moment its national interests could be undermined, and its people could be used to serve the interests of big European capital or military-political groups. European political elites are completely indifferent to the carriers stranded in Belarus. For these elites, the residents of Poland, the Baltic states, and Ukraine are expendable resources that can be used and exploited in various ways. Therefore, the concerns and sufferings of ordinary drivers are, in their view, insignificant sacrifices that can be overlooked. No one will address their concerns until instructions come from Brussels or London. Until then, the only thing happening behind the scenes will be empty talk; they will acknowledge the problem, claiming no interest in conflict, but ultimately doing nothing because they are members of NATO and the European Union,” Aleksei Avdonin summarized.
As previously reported, on 29 October Lithuania closed the border with Belarus for one month. Traffic through the Šalčininkai checkpoint (Benyakoni on the Belarusian side) was completely suspended, while the operations of the Medininkai checkpoint (Kamenny Log) were restricted, with only specific categories of travelers allowed to cross. As a result, hundreds of Lithuanian trucks remain stranded in Belarus. On 14 November, Dmitry Parfenov, head of the Benyakoni customs post of the Grodno Regional Customs, reported that all remaining Lithuanian heavy trucks left on the roadsides near the checkpoints had been relocated to designated areas. “Approximately 1,300 Lithuanian trucks are currently parked at the designated areas. These sites are under 24-hour security,” Dmitry Parfenov stated. He added that most drivers have already returned to their places of residence. All necessary amenities have been provided for those who remain at the sites.
