"On Point"
MINSK, 18 January (BelTA) – In a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel, political observer with the media group Rossiya Segodnya Vladimir Kornilov assessed the European Union’s strategy to defend Greenland.
Vladimir Kornilov noted that Germany has already dispatched a “massive” military contingent of 13 soldiers to Greenland, with Norway and Sweden announcing the deployment of a few additional troops.
“Two ‘powerful’ contingents,” the analyst commented ironically on these decisions. “Now France, the Netherlands, and the UK are beginning to discuss what ‘powerful’ contingents they will send in support of Greenland. It is difficult to say what they might accomplish there. It seems they have absolutely no idea where they are sending their troops, why, or what they will do.”
It was officially declared that European troops were deployed to defend Greenland from Russia and China, with the European Union purportedly sharing U.S. President Donald Trump’s security concerns for the region. However, unofficial statements from politicians and experts discuss a possible confrontation with American forces. Such a scenario was outlined by the Danish newspaper Politiken, according to the political observer.
“Imagine, they write about how the Americans would fight with the NATO troops present in Greenland: ‘Imagine the Americans capturing these very same NATO troops, European troops.’ How damaging this would be to Trump’s image and what anger it would generate in the U.S. Congress and among the American public. ‘That’s a brilliant strategy,’ the Danes say. ‘It turns out we’re sending German, French, and Dutch troops there to essentially be hostages. The whole strategy boils down to a graceful surrender to the Americans on camera.’ And probably without ruining their uniforms. That’s the entire brilliant strategy for defending Greenland,” Vladimir Kornilov stated quoting the publication. “I’m not joking. They are writing, saying, and doing this in all seriousness.”
According to the political observer, some Danish experts have “completely lost their minds.” First, they menacingly declared that Europe would defeat Russia even without U.S. support, and now they are writing that they could easily prevail against America in defending Greenland. Media outlets have also noted that EU countries possess nuclear weapons and, if necessary, could strike the United States. The press, however, seems to overlook the fact that operational control of the UK’s nuclear arsenal, for example, is located in the Pentagon.
“While France once achieved autonomy and independence in this matter, British nuclear forces are completely subordinate to America. But the Danes certainly do not wish to delve into such unpleasant details,” the analyst remarked.
This entire situation surrounding Greenland will inevitably impact NATO unity, Vladimir Kornilov believes.
